algebra brain teaser?

a landscaper has determined that together 1 small bag of lawn seed and 3 large bags will cover 300 m squared of ground. if the large bag covers 50 m squared more than the small bag, what is the area covered by each size bag?

not sure if this is a brain teaser or not, but it has sure as heck been bugging me! does anyone know how to solve this problem? could you please help teach me? thanks in advance

not really a brain teaser– more like a systems of equations problem, but certainly algebra!

let the amount the small bag covers be s, and the area the large bag covers be b (for big)

s + 3b = 300
(one small and 3 large covers 300 m^2)

b = s + 50 (large covers 50 more than small)

sub in to first equation
s + 3(s + 50) = 300
s + 3s + 150 = 300
4s = 150
s = 150 / 4 = 37.5

a small bag covers 37.5 m^2
a large bag covers 37.5 + 50 = 87.5 m^2

check: does s + 3b = 300?
37.5 + 3(87.5) = 37.5 + 262.5 = 300 checks…
