Use It or Lose It: the Theory and Practice of Brain Exercise and Fitness for Cognitive Health

Who has not heard "Use It or Lose It." Now, what is "it"? Last week I gave a talk at the Italian Consulate in San Francisco, and one of the attendees seemed to enjoy the best parts was learning what our brains are and how they work, with a peak in the box "black" our minds. Without understanding at least the basics, how can we make good decisions about health and fitness our own brain?
Let's review at a glance:
The brain is composed of three "brains" or main sub-systems, each named after the evolutionary moment in which it is believed that the sub-system have appeared.
1) or human brain neocortex is the newest area, where they perform higher-level thinking and complex integration tasks. Other mammals have this part too, but in a smaller proportion of the whole brain volume. This is where we have our left and right hemispheres.
The neocortex consists of
The frontal lobes, "or the director general of the brain, for sophisticated brain functions such as planning and conceptualization.
-Parietal lobes: dealing with the movement, the senses, and some forms of recognition
-Temporal lobe: processes of hearing and speech
-Occipital: visual processing center (credit: Morphonix)
B) limbic system or mammalian brain, critical for emotions and memory
The emotions are generated here as well as the appetites and urges you to help us survive. For example, the amygdala is activated to prepare to cope with a situation threat, resulting in our feeling of fear. The hippocampus is key to memory formation.
C) cerebellum and the trunk, or reptilian brain, which regulates variables vital basic as breathing, heart rate and motor coordination.
When we exercise our brains, we put our neurons and the connections between neurons in action.
Given the diversity of functions outlined above, it is clear that the different activities are going to activate the different areas the brain, scientists know now, thanks to neuroimaging. There is no magic bullet that is the best (or crossword puzzles, or software, or exercise): we need a variety of mental or brain stimulation "exercises."
"Cells that fire together wire together "Means that the synapses-the junctions between neurons-get more often solidified respective neurons" talk "to each other.
Here are some tips that can help you put this theory into practice:
– Be curious! Know your local library and community college, find local organizations or churches that offer classes or workshops
– Make a variety of things, even things that are not good (if you like to sing, try painting too)
– Puzzles and crosswords and Sudoku work or play games like chess and bridge
– Try a computerized brain fitness program for training personalized
– If you can only do one thing, learn something new every day!
