We need a Global Consortium for Brain Fitness and Training Innovation
Copyright (c) 2008 SharpBrains
The World Economic Forum asked me to write "a 800-word summary of your idea more convincing action on the challenges of aging and" gerontology, in preparation Inaugural Summit on Global Agenda will take place from the 7th to 9th in Dubai.
Here's my proposal to create a global consortium for the physical brain Innovation Training and help ensure that "No Brain Left Behind:
I. The context
– Growth Demands in our brains: Image primitive brain 6.7 billion who live in a knowledge society where lifelong learning and constant change control in complex environments are essential for productive labor, health and personal fulfillment.
Welcome to Planet Earth, 2008.
– In addition to extending the longevity: Now closed the picture to one billion of the brains in the 60 years of age – and please remember that, less than 100 years, life expectancy was 30 to 40 years. The rapid evolution knowledge society is creating enormous new demands on our "primitive" human brains. And the longer the life, the most obvious the knowledge gap. " Therefore, from a health point of view, the increasing prevalence of Alzheimer's disease and its precursor, mild cognitive impairment. And, a labor standpoint, the perception that older workers can not learn new tricks, and should be replaced by younger workers, as soon as possible.
– Importance of neuroplasticity throughout life: The good news is that brain research is that background shows how our brains neuroplasticity maintain life (the capacity of our brain that are reconfigured to respond to the experience), how they physically can be strengthened through cognitive / Brain Reserve and its enhanced features, not opening the way to slow down if you reverse the cognitive decline that often comes with age. Use and improvement can be more precise Use it or lose it, and help bridge the growing knowledge gap. Humans can become gardeners of our own brain, focusing on four pillars: a balanced diet, exercise, cardiovascular fitness, stress management and brain exercise that incorporates well-run novelty, variety and challenge.
– Cognitive neuroscience and neuropsychology are willing to step: an increasing number of frameworks based on current research and applications opportunities clear stream, however, are often misunderstood, and presented in a piecemeal and confusing. Consider becoming an annual "mental check-up" helping to establish a baseline and identify appropriate intervention. Think of being able to identify specific needs and improve non-invasively, the functions specific neurocognitive, and visual and auditory processing speed, working memory, executive function, emotional self-regulation, attention.
II. The problem
– We need bridges: It seems that there are several areas of the disconnect between gerontology, neuroscience in general preventive health, cognitive and neuropsychology. Innovative partnerships and collaboration will be necessary to transform the growing number of general interest and research results in the form rational, interdisciplinary and sustainable approach to neurocognitive ability.
– Growing confusion among consumers and professionals: no pills, "magical" or "general solution", but very useful tools when used appropriately. Better assessments, taxonomies and integrated research efforts are necessary for the field to mature. Some functions of the brain tend to improve as we age, while some tend to decrease. For example, as do executives face many difficult situations in the time it grows an "intuition" (or frosted pattern recognition) to the best approaches. While half environment does not change too fast, we can continue to accumulate wisdom. However, some areas of mental functioning tend to decrease. In general, we see areas that test our ability to learn and adapt to new environments, such as the hard problem solving in novel situations, processing speed, working memory and care. Research has shown that all these areas can be improved in older brains. But priorities are not the same for everyone or for all goals (safer driving, prevention of Alzheimer's symptoms, improving the memory …) In summary, the field holds much promise but the picture is complicated.
III. The Opportunity
– A global consortium for the physical brain and innovation training consisting of 100 universities most important, policy makers, health care / insurance providers and developers based neurocognitive assessment tools and technology training can provide the taxonomy, guidance and structure necessary to guide applications of cognitive neuroscience and neuropsychology in gerontology and geriatrics, and general health.
– A transparent online presence and could facilitate the participation of professionals and the general public. On However, yes, the brains of 60 years.
– Results:
1) Best practices: to share best practices on preventive education brain health, housing elderly, hospital-based programs, initiatives launched by insurance, public policy efforts.
2) Standards: define the rules for neurocognitive assessment and training tools
3) Taxonomy: establish a common taxonomy and language
4) Education: to engage professionals and the general public in maintaining the well-informed brain "
5) preparation policy: policy to anticipate consequences and to enhance preparedness,
6) research path: to propose a line of research and applications.
