Queenstown New Zealand-A day in paradise
Queenstown, New Zealand is a spectacular place. Located on the shores of deep blue Lake Wakatipu and surrounded of 7,000 feet (2,300 meters) high Remarkables, the scenery is breathtaking. Queenstown is a must for any holiday in New Zealand.
We would like Queenstown one day share with you.
Out of bed at about 8 am, the day is bright and sunny, but cool, with a maximum expected temperature 14 degrees Celsius today. It is mid-October and, although today is a perfect alpine day, there is snow on the peaks and small falls are still possible, although less likely as the month progresses.
We started the day with a hot breakfast in our apartment in Faro, overlooking the lake. Breathtaking views, and really worth worth paying a little more than a room overlooking the lake without interruption. Lake Wakatipu is about 40 kilometers (22 miles) long and extends between small people of Glenorchy and Kingston. The drive to any of these Queenstown is a memorable experience as you follow the lake shore to the end. But that's not for us today.
Today we went to the beautiful lakeside town of Wanaka (Wan-ka-a), which is about one hours drive from Queenstown. You can go through the town of Cromwell, but a much more interesting drive through the Cordillera de la Corona. The road climbs the mountain of the Crown and is the highest main road in New Zealand. There are several viewpoints on the road, which offer wonderful photo opportunities facing Queenstown (make sure you have a lot of movies, or digital users, a large memory card size). On the road, about 25 miles before passing the historic Wanaka Cardrona Hotel, which dates back to the 1800s. More on this later. Once in Wanaka we walk along the lake shore, and from the small pier in front of the Tourist Information center, you can see trout swimming hugh few feet below you in the clear waters of Lake Wanaka. Unbelievable. We took a walk around the city and as always, we are impressed by the cleanliness and presentation of the center of the city. The locals really have much pride. There are numerous cafes and gift shops, souvenir of his kiwi. If you have one or two hours to spare, visit the World disconcerting. This place is fun for children and adults, and has a maze, different optical illusions and a lot of mind games. Well worth a visit.
But now it's back to Queenstown. But not before a visit to Cardrona Hotel for lunch. Upon entering the hotel, you are greeted by examples of local historical bits and pieces, and the bar area, looking through a pane of glass on the floor to a gold mine shaft old. The hotel has a full menu of rich kiwi, and a selection of wines and beers. If the day is fresh has the option to sit inside the fireplace, but with such a perfect day, we decided again sit in the spacious garden and care in one of the many wooden tables. Our table sits on a beautiful lawn area and we are surprised by the distance between us and the diners closest (probably 15 meters or 50 feet). If you have children, there is plenty of room for them to explore safely. We sat in the sun and a Speights beer (ok, shows me two) and a Blanc local SAV, and tuck into lunch, thinking how perfect the day. Our food is well presented and very, very good. Even we are united by the resident cat, which is sitting next to us in our seat, and gently takes a few small pieces of chicken meat from me. The locals are friendly insurance.
Time for return to Queenstown, and as we descend the Cordillera de la Corona which again stunned by the sight and beauty of the Wakatipu basin. Upon reaching the bottom of the range, we detour a few miles to the historic town of Arrowtown, a town of old gold mining, which is now full of charming cafes and shops selling local crafts.
His then 20-minute drive back to Queenstown, where we put our feet in our apartment, looking out on the lake, and view Earnslaw steam the old SAT as a sail past in their regular cruises. We wonder what the future holds adventure in this magnificent place.
