How effective are "brain training" games?
There are a number of these for the Nintendo DS and the Iphone. And I can see how they look be very effective. They force people to think quickly, and people are conditioned to believe that the brain is like a muscle.The more you use it the stronger it gets. People even should see an improvement in time with these games as they become more familiar with its operation. The main problem I see is that it requires no thinking in depth. They are problems that no one can answer is just a matter of how quickly they do it. Have there been studies to see if these games actually improve cognitive function? I mean, should not be completely unfounded. I read a couple of studies showing playing Civilization series curbed onset of Alzheimer's, and other strategy games of this type should have a similar effect.
Well, I do not think I can answer your question in as much detail you want, from now on I have no study to myself again, but after playing the game for a couple of weeks I felt smarter. You could make equations with a higher speed, and could understand things with greater precision. I look into space at times, and may be a fool, but I think it helped.
