IQ Test Mental Retardation
What was the most effective thing you did to get your school district to accommodate your child gifted?
I have the IQ test in hand and make further tests under way to school in the district of the application. But it seems that every parent of a gifted child to opposition from public schools and either fights or gives up in public schools. By contrast, parents of children with mental retardation (DSM-IV-TR diagnostic term) do not seem to have so many problems. If you chose to fight with public schools on behalf of his gifted son, what was their most effective tactic?
As someone who has not only a disability (blindness) and who has spent years working with students with disabilities, I have to disagree. In most school systems, "education special "is given little more than words – and many parents have an endless struggle to obtain even a minimum of comfort. Not to minimize the problem – its very real (I I went down that road as myslelf child). My suggestion is threefold – and with specific reasons for each suggestion: First, as can be done without a big fight, that his son put in advanced classes, etc. The reason for this is obvious – maximize educational opportunities. Secondly – do not try to make a major issue of this – so least not in front of your child. Your best – for good – not push the issue. Why? Because two things happen: your child will receive a negative view of school and teachers, and second he / she will be – in his own mind – no unwanted or marginalized by the system. And that's a lot not what you want to happen – its practically a recipe to behavior problems down the road. Three – here's the important – and surprising part. Take the initiative to help your child develop intellectually. YOU have many more resources to do that the school does – I'm dead serious. Even under the best circumstances, the school is very far from the tools they have available. This is what I mean: the school must follow a formal education system (not an option – they have perhaps a thousand children – have to keep things organized. You do not – and you can use this to their advantage Childs. The idea is not to "teach", but to encourage (And to be frank, manipulate) your child to learn to teach us self-imagination, creativity, etc. Features: FIRST – and always – the public library. Do not dictate what your child lee – let them take what looks interesting – just make sure it is age appropriate. But do you have to make your child reading (including bribery if necessary) – In the long run, reading is a habit, so any tricks you use to start to be short term. DOS – is a huge amount of toys, games and projects available that require thought. One thing more children (not just the gifted) need now is the kind of things that were common a few decades ago – kits to build things, play chemical, electronic progets (for example – in elementary school, built working replicas of many devices – including the incandescent light and first phone theEdison Bell). Those things are still out there, however – and most cities have at least a store that specializes in such things. Three – in Evry city practically, is surrounded by opportunities: history sites, museums, aquariums, zoos, etc. Make visiting these a regular feature of family life. Also – most people do not realize that many of these have programs for children of all ages. These can range from vocational training programs for children Youn (a program in a museum in my city teachis children how to make everything from woven fabric for sails – even blacksmithing for older children). In short – whether books, your city, if the subject is science, history, etc – to teach your child to explore, investigate, and imagine. You are in a better position to do that school is – or can never be.
