Five Easy Ways To Increase Your Brain Power
Neurogenesis is a word that is thrown around a lot lately. This means your brain is grow new neurons – not just while you are young. Scientists used to believe that you were born with a certain set of neurons, and mental impairment is a part inevitability of aging.
Fortunately, we now know that this is not true. Your brain continues to produce new neurons throughout life. So, why have trouble remembering and why you do not feel as "strong" as you used to? These new neurons must be put to work in order for them to survive and strengthened. Literally, they have to use them or you'll lose.
You probably know that challenging your brain can combat age-related decline. It is why crosswords and Sudoku are so popular. You work diligently every day in the hopes that puzzles can keep your brain in shape. Research shows that it is a great start, but we need more. Your brain needs variety and novelty.
Think of it like this – you go to the gym every day in hopes of getting and keeping a fit, strong body. You take the dumbbell and three sets of biceps curls right. You put the barbell away, towel, and go home. Sure, you're doing exercise – the right arm looks amazing. Now look at the rest of his body. Not so great. The same happens when you exercise only part of his brain.
The key for a great brain exercise is to throw a curve ball. Do something completely out of the ordinary, something that breaks your routine, and you strengthen connections in the brain.
Try these five easy ways to exercise and increase their brain power.
1) Are you right? Try using your left hand to operate the computer mouse.
2) Reciting the alphabet backwards. Try this, and you feel your brain extends to move the way from Z to A.
3) Take a different route to work, school or the grocery store. Your brain is on autopilot for most of the time, so wake up to learn a new way.
4) Enjoy your favorite TV show with his eyes closed. Try it for only ten minutes if you can not get all along. Viewing recreating the characters and scenes in your mind forces your brain to focus on the program and what is actually happening.
5) Get in the shower and start singing. A study published in The Psychology of Music "showed that singing familiar tunes help to improve spatial intelligence – the reasoning of your brain uses to judge distance.
