Studies have shown that participation in mental activity through games and puzzles can help keep strong mind in old age. Just as regular physical exercise helps the body, regular mental exercise has benefits for the mind. Complete and crossword puzzles, and games table have proved beneficial for the maintenance of short-term memory, eye-hand coordination and concentration in general. In a study of more than five years 400 participants from more than 75 years of age, it was found that activities involving thinking, such as reading, writing and games were more likely to prevent dementia. Physical activities tested, only dancing was of some use to keep our minds in shape.

This amazing puzzle was an immediate hit when it first came out in 1980. The inventor/designer was a Hungarian professor of architecture named Emo Rubik, he did this in 1974. He named it the “Magic Cube” and licensed the puzzle to Ideal Toys for them to sell for him.
Rubik won the game of the year special award from Germany. By Janurary of 2009 an estimated 350 million cubes had been sold throughout the world. Not bad for a little puzzle game.
The puzzle now comes in various forms besides the original cube. The original cube was 6 sided. Each side was divided into nine squares. Six solid colors were used, the traditional colors are green, blue, white, red, orange, and yellow. To solve the puzzle, your objective was to turn the built in pivot mechanism until you have one solid face of each of the six colors in your cube.
This year 2010, is the 30th anniversary of the toys first sale. The original cube measured 3 x 3 x 3 inches. There are many different kinds of puzzles that are similar to this great puzzle toy on the market now.
There have been many competitions with this puzzle to see who could solve the puzzle the quickest. The current fastest solution was done by Toby Mao in 2006. He did this in 10.48 seconds at the U.S. nationals in San Francisco. The former record was 11.13 seconds held by Leyan Andrew Lo, he is a graduate of the California Institute of Technology, with a BS in Physics.
